Do you love community, local food security, and chewy red velvet cookies? If you answered yes to any one of those, the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market is the place for you!
For our second monthly market of the year, you’ll find a dozen local farmers, bakers, and food producers up at the Creston & District Community Complex from 9am-1pm this Saturday, February 13, 2021.
The Dan McMurray Community Seed Bank will also be joining us this Saturday with three whole tables full of thousands of packets of local, heirloom seeds available by donation! The seed bank in Creston started in 2012, when an extensive collection of vegetable seeds (mainly tomatoes) was donated to the College of the Rockies and the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition in trust for the community. The collection was built up by Dan and Val McMurray beginning in 2004 and included 1600 varieties of tomatoes, many of which were rare heirlooms. Volunteers and college staff maintained the seeds, although the collection was too large to do this adequately. In 2015, the Community Seed Bank received a grant from the Seed Facilitation Fund which enabled them to inventory the seeds, recruit growers, grow out about 300 plants for seed-saving, downsize the tomato collection by donating over 800 varieties to Seeds of Diversity, and begin planning to put the seed bank on a sustainable basis.
Our parent organization, the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition, will also be selling community memberships for $10 this Saturday. Your membership will not only support the Farmers’ Market, but other important food initiatives in the Valley such as the Harvest Share Program and Whole Foods to Whole Families Program. Members will also receive their own CVFM tote bag to fill up with tasty market goods all year long.
